Safe Turning
Vehicles are at the greatest risk of collision when they change directions. Turn signals are important for reducing that risk, especially on roads and highways. By expressing the operator’s intention to turn, they facilitate coordination among other operators, workers and even pedestrians in the vicinity. They’re good common sense wherever there’s traffic — and that includes jobsites, industrial zones, parking lots, service centers and countless other places.
Thankfully, adding or upgrading turn signals isn’t hard or costly. It’s a small investment for a large benefit.
Flasher Failures
As the name suggests, a flasher (also called a flasher unit or flasher relay) is responsible for making turn signals and hazard lights flash. It does this by sending the lights an intermittent electrical current. It also makes the reassuring clicking sound you hear in sync with the flashing, letting you know your lights are working properly.
When your turn signals and hazards malfunction, the fault could lie with your flasher but also with a variety of other parts — bulbs, fuses, sockets and switches, for starters. And since different kinds of failures have the same symptoms, pinpointing the precise cause may take some trial and error. Nevertheless, here are the most likely results of a bad flasher:
● No Light: Your turn signals and hazards don’t turn on
● No Flashing: Your turn signals and hazards turn on but don’t flash
● Off Tempo: Your turn signals and hazards flash too quickly or too slowly
Other problems can cause these symptoms, too. Bad grounds, insufficient power and blown fuses, for example, could all prevent your lights from turning on. But that’s yet another reason why it’s a good idea to keep spare parts on hand: They help you diagnose problems at the same time they help you fix them.
